This fall you will notice that khakis (also known as chinos) are taking a cue from the denim world, employing interesting washes, new fits, good hardware, and detailing. Its all about options and variations, shedding the previous image khakis had for not being serious enough for business and not cool enough for after hours. This fall Gap, Dockers, Travota, Theory and Original Penguin, just to name a few, are all coming out with modern, restyled versions of this classic wardrobe item.
The Experts Have Been Doing Their Homework
Men have spent a few years now picking up all manner of denim. According to market research conducted by Cotton Incorporated, men own an average of nearly eight pairs of jeans. And while most men still prefer denim over casual slacks, Cotton Incorporated finds there has been a significant increase in the percent of men who said they prefer casual slacks (33%, up from 26% in 2004) to denim jeans. To grow those numbers even more, the latest khakis must look and feel modern says Lauren Deatherage, mens trend specialist for Cotton Incorporated.
The Versatility of Khakis
When these new khakis are paired with sport jackets, it will be the type of look that will appeal to young men looking for something other than denim to pair with their premium tees says Deatherage. And personally, I think the beauty of khakis is that they go with everything - they are an essential pant in every mans wardrobe and keep you prepared for those semi-casual occasions such as a date, a more casual day at the office, etc.
What Guys Really Want
Of course, for some men, a pant thats easy to wear is even better if its easy care. Cotton Incorporateds research shows performance chinos are hands down favorites among men, especially those aged 35 to 55, who prefer wrinkle-resistant slacks to regular cotton slacks 67% to 24%. Furthermore, the research finds that men aged 35 to 55 showed the biggest percentage increase (from 26% to 34%) in a preference for casual pants. Among men aged 16 to 24, the preference grew from 25% to 29%. The updated khaki pant will likely appeal to men of all ages, so make sure to check them out.
