Definition: Modal is made the cellulose of beech trees. It's about 50% more hygroscopic (water-absorbent) than cotton. It is essentially a variety of rayon. Fabrics made from Modal are resistant to shrinkage and fading. Modal may be used on its own or blended with cotton, spandex, etc. It is often used in men's underwear because of it's ability to wick moisture.
