Cashmere

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Cashmere is the underdown shed annually by Tibetan, Mongolian and Iranian goats. These goats have a coarse outer hair called guard hair that repels the harsh weather. Under that outer coat lies a much finer fiber, cashmere, which is extremely warm and protects the goats from the cold mountain temperatures.

And why is it so expensive? It takes one of these rare goats four years to grow enough cashmere for one sweater.
