Linen--The Sign of Summer
Monday June 23, 2008
Certainly the sign of summer, in wardrobe terms, is linen. This amazing fabric is made from fibers produced by the flax plant and was first used for clothing by the ancient Egyptians. Linen fibers are much stronger than cotton with no fuzziness and with a natural luster and stiffness. What’s more, linen fibers are very cool and absorbent which is why it is the perfect summer fabric. But of course linen wrinkles very easily unless blended with other fibers. And because it wrinkles easily, it is inherently casual which, again, makes it the perfect summer fabric. But not everyone can handle the casual, wrinkled look of linen and those people should go for linen blends. However, I will say that once you wear linen on a hot day, you will understand what all the fuss is about.
